How to Write the Best Short Story
If you are a new writer or have not written a short story for a while, writing one my not be as easy. In as much as the story writing techniques and methods are different depending on what one is writing, there are patterns that everyone will eventually follow in their jumbled way. These are some sort of requirements that you need to write a good short story. There are three things that will be really vital before you can even go to writing and they include an idea, the right devices and utensils and enough time.
There is a difference between the story that you can tell a friend over the tea, the funny and crazy story, and then there is the art short story form that comes with the whole package of styles, descriptions, plot and characters. The first part will be writing this story, the one that you can tell a friend all the time. This should be done in one suiting, with no breaks and no research. The next thing will be to find the protagonist and in as much as this may seem like an easy step it is not. After that, you will then need to find the protagonist of your story and in as much as this may seem obvious and simple, sometimes it is not. The next thing after that will be to identify the protagonist of your story, and this is where many people go wrong as they think that this is easy and direct. The protagonist is the person the hubs your story and whose destiny gives your story the meaning, not necessarily the ‘good guy’ of the story or even that narrator.
Among the very important things that the story will need are s great first line as this has the power to glue the readers to the story. This is where you invite the readers into the scene, establish a voice and more importantly, create some element of surprise. You should be clear here and if possible, tell the entirety of the story in a single statement. Breaking the story into scenes helps you organize the story, show you where some more work is needed and more importantly, give the story some life.
This is where now the research should come in. There is some clear direction that you will have set and doing the research early may distort that, and not doing it at all will leave the story unprecise and undeveloped. Waiting until the story is underway will help you ask specific questions and the story will not be derailed by the whole research process. When all this s set, the next thing will be to write and edit. The story is never at the end if you have not yet published. Before you can get the feedbacks from the greater community of writers, you should start with a small group of the writers or even friends. Last but not least, get it out there to the world.
